How to Get Claude Pro Without a Credit Card
Last updated · Reviewed quarterly
You do not need a credit card to get Claude Pro, but you do need something Anthropic's processor accepts — and the five ways of arranging that differ enormously in cost and in what they require of you. If you have no card at all and cannot pass exchange KYC, one of these five still works.
Key takeaways
- Claude does not require a credit card. An ordinary debit card works once international transactions are enabled on it.
- Having someone with a working card gift you a subscription costs list price and nothing more, which beats every paid route.
- An app-store gift card bought locally for cash funds a mobile purchase with no international transaction at all.
- A gift subscription bought with crypto needs no card, bank account or identity verification, and costs about 15-25% over list.
First: do you need Pro at all?
The free tier of Claude is genuinely usable for light work, and paying 20–25% over list price to access a paid tier you use twice a week is a bad trade. Pro is worth it if you are hitting usage limits regularly, want Claude Code, or need Projects. If you are not sure, run the free tier hard for a week and see whether you hit the ceiling. We would rather tell you this than sell you something you do not need.
Method 1 — A debit card (yes, really)
Claude does not require a credit card specifically. An ordinary debit card from your bank works, including Visa and Mastercard debit issued in most countries. A surprising number of people conclude they need a credit card when their existing debit card would have worked with one setting changed.
- Enable international or online transactions in your banking app — this is the single most common blocker.
- Keep at least 10% headroom over the plan price to cover FX fees and the authorisation hold.
- Make sure the billing address matches your bank records exactly.
- Open your banking app and find the card controls — usually under card settings, security, or limits.
- Turn on international transactions, and online or e-commerce transactions. At many banks these are two separate switches and one can be on while the other is off.
- Raise the foreign-currency or international spending limit above the plan price, with roughly 10% headroom for the FX fee and the authorisation hold.
- Copy your billing address from your bank statement rather than typing it from memory, and use it exactly at checkout.
- Retry once. If it fails again, note the exact wording of the error before trying anything else — it tells you which of the six causes you are in.
If that fails, our card-declined guide walks through all six causes in order.
Method 2 — Crypto-funded virtual card
Top up a virtual card issuer with crypto, get a card number, use it on claude.ai. Cost is roughly 5–8% over list once top-up fees, issuance and FX are counted. The advantage over everything else here is that it auto-renews.
Method 3 — Gift subscription paid with crypto (no KYC)
Anthropic sells gift subscriptions as prepaid codes. A service like this one accepts your crypto, buys the official gift, and emails you the code. You redeem it on your own account. No card, no bank, no identity verification — an email address is the only thing required, and only so we can send the code.
The trade-off is time and trust. Fulfilment is manual — an operator buys the gift by hand — so delivery takes hours rather than seconds, and our published SLA is within 12 hours. Anyone in this market claiming instant delivery is either scripting against claude.ai, which gets accounts banned, or overstating what they can do.
| Debit card | Virtual card | Gift + crypto | Ask a friend | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank account needed | Yes | Usually | No | No |
| Identity verification | Already done | Almost always | None | None |
| Cost over list price | 0% | ~5–8% | ~15–25% | 0% |
| Auto-renews | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Works in a restricted country | Rarely | Rarely | Payment yes, account no | Payment yes, account no |
Method 4 — Have someone gift it to you directly
The cheapest option by far and the one people overlook. Anyone who already subscribes to Claude Pro or Max can buy an official gift subscription at list price and send you the code — Anthropic restricts gift purchases to existing paying subscribers, so a free-tier friend cannot help. If you know someone who qualifies, this costs list price and nothing more.
This is exactly what a service like ours does, except we charge a markup for doing it. If you have someone who can, ask them first. It is the same product.
Method 5 — Buy it inside the mobile app
This belongs on any honest list and is missing from most of them, probably because nobody earns a commission on it. A subscription started on the web is billed through Anthropic's card processor. A subscription started inside the Claude iOS or Android app is billed by Apple or Google instead — and those accept payment methods your bank card is not involved in.
- App-store credit, funded by a gift card bought with cash in an ordinary shop in your own country and currency.
- Carrier billing, where your mobile operator supports it — the charge lands on your phone bill.
- Any payment method already attached to your store account, including local ones your bank card is unrelated to.
- No international transaction takes place, so the block that causes most declines never applies.
The catches are real but small. Your store account country must be one where the purchase is offered, so this does not defeat a genuine country restriction any more than a gift code does. Store pricing is sometimes a little above web pricing because the platform takes a cut. And you manage the subscription through the store rather than through Anthropic, which matters when you want to cancel. Even so, this is cheaper than every paid route on this page including ours, and it renews by itself.
Choosing between them without reading all of it
The methods are not ranked by quality — they are ranked by what you have available. Work down this list and stop at the first line that describes you.
- You have a debit card that has never been tried with international payments enabled: fix that setting first. Cost over list, zero.
- You have a friend or relative abroad with a working card: ask them to gift it. Cost over list, zero.
- You can buy an app-store gift card locally with cash: use the mobile app route. Cost over list, near zero, and it renews.
- You can pass identity verification and want auto-renewal: a crypto-funded virtual card, at roughly 5–8% over list.
- You cannot pass KYC, have no card, and have no one to ask: a gift subscription paid in crypto, at 15–25% over list. This is us, and it is deliberately last.
What the cost difference actually looks like
One figure to hold onto before the percentages: Anthropic sells an annual plan at $17 a month, billed as $200 up front, alongside the $20 monthly price. Every percentage below is measured against monthly billing, so against the annual plan the premiums are larger — and if a card can be made to work at all, the annual plan beats every paid route on this page.
Percentages over list are abstract. Over a year on Claude Pro at $20 a month, the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive route on this page is roughly the cost of two extra months of the subscription itself — which is worth knowing before you decide that convenience is what matters.
| Route | Roughly over list | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Own debit card | Nothing | Nothing — if it works |
| Gifted by someone with a card | Nothing | You owe someone a favour |
| Mobile app store | Nothing to a little | Managing the plan through the store |
| Crypto-funded virtual card | Around 5–8% | KYC, issuance and top-up fees, a card that can be declined later |
| Gift code bought with crypto | Around 15–25% | No auto-renewal, and you wait hours rather than seconds |
One thing that table cannot show: a virtual card at 5–8% is only cheaper if the issuer accepts you and the BIN is not refused at checkout. A card you cannot get, or that gets declined after you have funded it, costs more than the expensive option that works. That is the whole reason the gift route exists.
What about "free Claude Pro" offers?
A note on account safety
Whichever method you use, never give anyone your Claude account password. Redeeming a gift code is something you do yourself, signed in to your own account, at claude.ai/gift/redeem. Any seller who asks for your credentials so they can "apply the upgrade for you" is either going to resell your account or lock you out of it.
No card and no way to get one? Pay in USDT, USDC, BTC or SOL — no account, no KYC.
See plans and pricesFrequently asked questions
Can I get Claude Pro without a credit card?
Yes. A debit card works if international transactions are enabled on it. If you have no card at all, a crypto-funded virtual card or an official gift subscription code both work — the gift route requires no card, bank account or identity verification.
Does Claude Pro require KYC or identity verification?
Anthropic does not ask for ID to subscribe. KYC enters the picture only through third parties — virtual card issuers and some exchanges require it. Buying a gift subscription with crypto avoids KYC entirely, since only an email address is needed for delivery.
Can I use a debit card for Claude Pro?
Yes, Visa and Mastercard debit cards work. The usual reason one fails is that the bank blocks international or online transactions by default, which is a setting you can change in most banking apps.
Is there a free way to get Claude Pro?
No legitimate one. The free tier is real and usable, but offers of free or heavily discounted Pro through resellers are scams — typically stolen accounts that get reclaimed, or simple theft. Anthropic does not distribute promotional codes through third-party sellers.
Can someone else pay for my Claude Pro subscription?
Yes, and it is the cheapest route — but only someone who already pays for Claude Pro or Max can buy a gift. Anthropic does not allow free-tier users, or members of Team and Enterprise organisations, to purchase them. If you know a qualifying subscriber, they buy at list price and send you the code, which is precisely what a reseller does with a markup added.
Can I buy Claude Pro with an app store gift card?
Yes, and it is one of the cheapest routes available. Start the upgrade inside the Claude iOS or Android app rather than in a browser, and the charge is billed by Apple or Google against your store balance — which you can fund with a gift card bought for cash in a local shop, in your own currency, with no international transaction. Your store account country must be one where the purchase is offered.
Which method is cheapest if I have no card at all?
Having someone with a working card gift you a subscription costs list price and nothing more. After that, an app-store gift card is near list. A crypto-funded virtual card runs about 5–8% over once fees are counted but needs identity verification, and a gift code bought with crypto runs about 15–25% over and needs nothing but an email address. Cheapest and easiest point in opposite directions.
Do I need a bank account to subscribe to Claude Pro?
Not necessarily. A gift subscription bought with crypto requires no bank account, no card and no identity verification. An app-store purchase funded with a cash-bought gift card also involves no bank. Every other route on this page assumes you have either a card or an account that can fund one.
Is it safe to give a seller my Claude account details?
No. Never share your Claude password with anyone. A legitimate gift code is redeemed by you, on your own account, at claude.ai/gift/redeem. A seller asking for credentials is either going to resell the account or lock you out.
