Why the app store is a different payment rail

A subscription started on claude.ai in a browser is billed by Anthropic through a card processor. A subscription started inside the Claude iOS or Android app is billed by Apple or Google instead. Anthropic states this plainly: if you subscribed through the mobile apps, your payment is handled by the App Store or Google Play, and you manage it through that account rather than in Claude.

That single difference is why the route works. Your app store account can hold credit that has nothing to do with your bank — credit you put there with a gift card bought for cash in a shop near you, in your own currency. No international transaction happens, so the block that causes most declined Claude payments never applies.

What you need

• An iPhone, iPad or Android device — or an Android emulator, though a real device is simpler.
• An app store account whose country is one where the Claude subscription is offered. This is the part that can disqualify you, so check it first.
• A gift card for that same store and country. Cards are region-locked: a US App Store card cannot redeem into a UK account.
• Enough credit to cover the plan price plus a little, because store pricing sometimes sits slightly above web pricing.

On iPhone or iPad, step by step

1. Buy an App Store & iTunes gift card in your own country, for the currency your Apple Account uses. Supermarkets, phone shops and convenience stores commonly carry them, and cash is fine.
2. Open the App Store app, tap your profile picture, then "Redeem Gift Card" and enter the code. Your balance updates immediately.
3. Install the Claude app if you have not already, and sign in to the account you want upgraded. This must be the same account you use elsewhere or the plan lands in the wrong place.
4. Open the upgrade flow inside the app — not in Safari. If you start it in a browser you are back on the card rail and the whole point is lost.
5. Confirm the purchase. Apple charges your balance first and only falls back to a card if the balance is short, so make sure it covers the full amount.
6. Check the plan shows on your Claude account. Manage or cancel it through your Apple Account subscriptions, not through Claude’s billing settings.

On Android, step by step

1. Buy a Google Play gift card in your own country and currency. Same shops, same cash-is-fine rule.
2. Open the Play Store, tap your profile, then Payments and subscriptions, then Redeem code.
3. Install and open the Claude app, and sign in to the account you want upgraded.
4. Start the upgrade inside the app. Play uses your balance before any other payment method on file.
5. If you have no gift card, check whether carrier billing is offered in your country — Play supports it in many markets, and the charge lands on your phone bill instead.
6. Manage the subscription through Play’s subscriptions screen afterwards.

What this route costs you

Store pricing can sit slightly above web pricing, because the platform takes a cut and the developer sometimes prices to absorb it. Even so it is the cheapest working route on this table for anyone whose card is being refused, and it is the only one that both avoids a card and renews by itself.

When it will not work

• Your app store account country is not one where the subscription is offered. Changing account region is disruptive and can forfeit existing balance — think carefully before treating it as a workaround.
• You cannot buy a gift card for your own account region locally. Third-party card resellers exist and are a common source of fraud; a card bought at a discount from a stranger is frequently already redeemed.
• You already have an active web subscription. Buying again in the app can leave you paying twice — cancel or wait for the term to end first.
• You want the subscription on a work or managed account. Those are administered centrally and a personal purchase will not attach.

If the store route is closed to you

Work down in order of cost. First, check whether your own bank card can be made to work — for many readers that is one free toggle and it is cheaper than everything here. Then ask anyone you know abroad with a working card to buy you an official gift subscription at list price. Then a crypto-funded virtual card, if you can pass the issuer’s checks.
