Claude payment stuck on processing — what is actually happening
Last updated · Reviewed quarterly
A payment that hangs is not a payment that failed, and the two need opposite responses. A decline is final and you have to change something before retrying. A pending charge is still in flight, and the most common way people turn a recoverable pending charge into a real problem is by retrying it three more times. Here is how to tell which one you have.
Key takeaways
- A pending charge is not a decline. Money may be held rather than taken, and the hold usually releases on its own within 5 to 10 working days.
- Retrying a pending payment can place a second authorisation hold on the same card, tying up more of your balance and increasing the chance of a fraud block.
- If the page hangs and never returns, the usual cause is a 3-D Secure verification window that was blocked or closed, not a problem with the card.
- A charge that shows on your statement while Claude still shows the free plan is a different problem, and Anthropic support can fix that one.
Pending, declined or failed — telling them apart
These three words get used interchangeably by both banks and websites, and they describe genuinely different states. Which one you are in decides whether waiting or acting is correct.
| What you see | What it means | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Bank app shows a pending or reserved amount | An authorisation hold. The money is ringfenced but not taken. | Wait. Do not retry. |
| Checkout spinner never returns | Usually a 3-D Secure window that was blocked or dismissed. | Close the tab, wait 10 minutes, retry once in a clean window. |
| Explicit "declined" message | The issuer refused. This is final for that attempt. | Change something before retrying. |
| Charge settled on the statement, no plan on the account | Payment succeeded, provisioning did not. | Contact Anthropic support with the statement line. |
| Nothing at all in the bank app | The request never reached your issuer. | The block is upstream of your bank. |
Why an authorisation hold looks like a charge
When a merchant checks that a card is good for an amount, the issuer places a hold: the money leaves your available balance but is not transferred. If the merchant then never captures it — because the checkout errored, or the verification step timed out — the hold sits there until the issuer expires it. That is typically 5 to 10 working days, and in some markets longer.
The practical consequence is that a failed purchase can still make money disappear from your balance for a week, without anyone having been paid. This is normal, it is not a scam, and no amount of contacting the merchant speeds it up — only your issuer can release a hold early, and most will not.
The 3-D Secure timeout, which causes most hangs
The single most common reason a Claude checkout hangs rather than failing cleanly is that the verification step opened and never completed. The page is waiting for a result that is never coming.
- A pop-up blocker silenced the verification window, so you never saw it and the page waited for something invisible.
- The window opened behind the main tab and was closed without being noticed.
- The one-time code went to a phone number the issuer holds but you no longer use.
- Verification was completed too slowly — many issuers expire the challenge after a few minutes.
- A privacy extension or strict browser profile blocked the redirect back from the bank.
The fix is the same in every case: close the tab entirely rather than refreshing it, disable pop-up blocking and aggressive privacy extensions for the checkout, use a normal browser window rather than private mode, keep your banking app open and ready, and try once. Refreshing a hung checkout is what produces duplicate holds.
How long to wait before doing anything
- First 15 minutes: do nothing. Some verification and settlement paths genuinely take this long, and the plan may simply appear.
- After 15 minutes with no plan and no decline: close everything, then start one fresh attempt in a clean browser window.
- If a second pending hold appears: stop. Two holds on one card is the point at which further attempts start causing fraud blocks.
- After 24 hours with a pending hold and no plan: the hold will expire on its own. Contact your issuer only if you need the funds released sooner.
- After 5 to 10 working days: an uncaptured hold should have dropped off. If it has settled into a real charge and you still have no plan, that is now a support case, not a payment problem.
When the money actually left and you got nothing
This is the case worth separating out, because it is the one where contacting somebody helps. If the charge has settled on your statement — not pending, settled — and your Claude account still shows the free plan, the payment worked and the provisioning did not. Anthropic holds that billing record and can resolve it.
Give them the exact amount, the date, and the merchant descriptor as it appears on your statement, and say clearly that the charge settled and the plan did not activate. Do not describe it as a declined payment, because that sends the conversation to the wrong place and they will tell you to contact your bank.
If it hangs every time
A checkout that hangs once is a transient fault. A checkout that hangs on every attempt, across browsers, is a structural problem with the verification path between your issuer and the processor — and it is not something you can debug from your side. At that point the options are the same as for a hard decline: a different card, the mobile app store route, or a gift subscription that removes the card from the transaction entirely.
Before spending money on any of those, work through our declined-card guide. Several of the six causes there produce a hang rather than a clean refusal, and most of them are free to fix.

Why is my Claude payment stuck on processing?
Most often the 3-D Secure verification step opened and never completed — the window was blocked by a pop-up blocker, closed unnoticed, or the one-time code expired. The checkout is waiting for a result that will never arrive. Close the tab entirely rather than refreshing, then try once in a normal browser window with pop-ups allowed.
Will a pending Claude charge turn into a real charge?
Not if the purchase never completed. An authorisation hold ringfences the money without transferring it, and an uncaptured hold expires on its own, typically within 5 to 10 working days. The money returns to your available balance without you doing anything, though only your issuer can release it faster.
Should I retry a Claude payment that is still processing?
No, not immediately. Each attempt can place another authorisation hold on the same card, so three retries can tie up three times the plan price and cause genuine insufficient-funds failures afterwards. Wait 15 minutes, then make one clean attempt. If a second hold appears, stop.
I was charged for Claude Pro but the plan did not activate — what now?
First check you are signed in to the same account you paid on; a Google sign-in and an email sign-in with the same address are often two different accounts. If the charge has settled on your statement and the correct account still shows the free plan, that is a provisioning failure and Anthropic support can resolve it. Give them the amount, date and statement descriptor.
How long does a Claude payment take to go through normally?
A successful card payment activates the plan within seconds to a couple of minutes, including the verification step. Anything still unresolved after fifteen minutes has failed in some way, even if nothing on screen says so.
