Claude gift code not working — the four causes
Last updated · Reviewed quarterly
A gift code that will not redeem is alarming because the money is already spent and the code looks like a dead end. In practice there are only four causes, they produce different error messages, and two of the four are things you can fix yourself in under a minute. The other two are the seller’s problem — and whether you get your money back depends entirely on who you bought from.
Key takeaways
- Redeem at claude.ai/redeem while signed in to your own account. No legitimate seller ever needs your Claude password.
- "Already redeemed" means the code was consumed — either by you on a different account, or by someone before it reached you.
- A code that fails on a country-restricted account is an availability problem, not a bad code, and no seller can fix it.
- Report a genuinely bad code within 48 hours. Sellers with a written refund window will replace it; sellers without one owe you nothing.
How redemption is supposed to work
- Sign in to claude.ai on the account you want upgraded, using the same sign-in method you always use.
- Go to claude.ai/redeem in the same browser session.
- Paste the code exactly as delivered, including hyphens, with no trailing space.
- Confirm. The plan activates on that account immediately, with no card added and no billing details requested.
If the flow at any point asks for a card, asks you to sign in again on an unfamiliar page, or asks for your password a second time, stop. That is not the redemption flow.
Cause 1 — Transcription and formatting
The least serious cause and the most common. Codes get retyped from a screenshot, copied with an invisible trailing space, or mangled by a chat app that helpfully capitalises the first letter.
- Copy directly from the delivery email rather than retyping from an image.
- Watch for characters that look alike: zero and letter O, one and letter l, and in some fonts eight and B.
- Strip leading and trailing whitespace — pasting into a plain text editor first makes a stray space visible.
- Include the hyphens if the code has them, and do not add any if it does not.
- Try pasting into the field rather than typing, then check the field visually before submitting.
Cause 2 — Already redeemed
This message means the code was valid and has been consumed. The question is by whom, and there are only two answers.
The benign answer is that you redeemed it yourself on a different account and have forgotten, which is common when a Google sign-in and an email sign-in share an address. Sign out fully, sign back in each way you might have used, and check whether a plan is already sitting there. Do that before you contact anyone, because it resolves a meaningful share of these and takes two minutes.
The other answer is that the code was consumed before it reached you. That happens when a code has been resold more than once, or when a seller delivers codes from stock that has already been used. This is the failure mode that makes cheap unknown sellers expensive, and it is the reason a written refund window matters more than a low price.
Cause 3 — Wrong account or wrong region
A gift code adds a paid plan to an account that can already use Claude. If the account itself is not served — because Anthropic does not operate in that country — the code has nothing to attach to. The code is fine; the account cannot receive it.
This is worth understanding rather than fighting, because no seller can solve it and any seller who claims to is lying to you. It is also why our country pages for unsupported regions say no and refuse the sale outright. Using a VPN to work around it risks account termination with no refund, which turns a payment problem into the loss of both the money and the account.
Cause 4 — The code was never valid
Generated, guessed or fabricated codes fail immediately with an invalid error. If you bought at a steep discount from a Telegram seller, an account marketplace or a social media DM, this is the likely explanation, and there is usually no recourse.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Can it be recovered? |
|---|---|---|
| "Invalid code" | Typo, or a code that never existed | Yes if a typo; usually not if fabricated |
| "Already redeemed" | Consumed by you elsewhere, or resold | Yes if on your other account; depends on the seller otherwise |
| "Expired" | Unredeemed past its validity window | Seller-dependent |
| Accepts but no plan appears | Applied to a different account than the one you are viewing | Yes — sign in the other way |
| Error mentioning region or availability | Account not served in that country | No. Not a code problem. |
What you can actually get back
Recourse is determined entirely by who sold you the code, and it is worth being blunt about the range. A seller with a published refund policy and a stated window has an obligation you can hold them to. A seller without one has no obligation at all, and crypto payments are irreversible, so there is no card issuer to appeal to either.
Our own policy, for the avoidance of doubt: report an invalid or already-redeemed code within 48 hours and we replace it or refund in full, less the network fee. The same applies if we miss the delivery SLA. That window exists because codes are verifiable quickly and an unlimited window on an irreversible payment is not something anyone can honestly offer.
Buying a replacement? Ours comes with an itemised price, a 12-hour delivery SLA and a written 48-hour refund window.

Why does my Claude gift code say already redeemed?
Either you redeemed it yourself on a different account — very common when a Google sign-in and an email sign-in share the same address — or the code was consumed before it reached you, which happens with resold or pre-used stock. Check every sign-in method you own first, then go back to the seller with the exact error text.
Can a Claude gift code be used twice?
No. A gift code is consumed by the first successful redemption and cannot be applied again, on any account. That is why a code shared in a screenshot or a public message is effectively gone — whoever redeems it first keeps it.
Does a Claude gift code work in any country?
It works on any account Anthropic already serves. It cannot make Claude available where it is not offered, because that is an account-level restriction rather than a payment one. A code failing on an unsupported account is not a faulty code and no seller can fix it.
What should I do if a seller asks for my Claude password to apply a code?
Stop dealing with them. Redemption is done by you, on your own account, at claude.ai/redeem, and no legitimate seller ever needs your credentials. A request for your password means they intend to resell the account or lock you out of it.
How long do I have to report a bad Claude gift code?
That depends entirely on the seller. Ours is 48 hours from delivery for a full refund less the network fee, or a replacement. Sellers without a published policy have no obligation at all, and since crypto payments are irreversible there is no card issuer to appeal to — which is the real reason to check the terms before you buy rather than after.
