Charged for Claude Pro but no subscription appeared
Last updated · Reviewed quarterly
This is the worst version of a payment problem, because the money is gone and there is nothing to show for it. The good news is that it is usually recoverable, and that in most cases nothing has actually been lost — you are looking at either an authorisation hold that will expire, or a plan sitting on an account you are not currently signed in to. Work through these in order before contacting anyone.
Key takeaways
- Check which account you are signed in to first. A Google sign-in and an email sign-in using the same address are two separate accounts at many services, and the plan may be on the other one.
- Two identical amounts on your statement are usually one real charge and one authorisation hold, not a double charge. Holds expire on their own within 5 to 10 working days.
- A charge that has settled with no plan on the correct account is a provisioning failure, and Anthropic support holds the billing record needed to fix it.
- A card dispute should be your last step, not your first — it can close the account you are trying to get access to.
Step 1 — Confirm which account you are looking at
Do this before anything else, because it resolves a large share of these cases in under a minute and costs nothing. Signing in with Google and signing in with an email and password produce two distinct accounts even when the address is identical. If you paid while signed in one way and are now checking the other, the plan is real and you simply cannot see it.
- Sign out completely rather than opening a new tab, then sign back in using the exact method you used at purchase.
- Check any second address you own — work and personal accounts get mixed up constantly.
- Check whether you were signed in to a different browser profile or an incognito window when you paid.
- On mobile, check whether the app is signed in to the same account as the browser you paid from.
Step 2 — Work out what the charge on your statement actually is
Two lines for the same amount usually means one settled charge and one pending hold, which is not the same as being billed twice. The distinction matters because one of them disappears by itself and the other does not.
| What you see | What it is | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| One settled, one pending, same amount | A hold left over from an earlier attempt | The pending line expires in 5 to 10 working days |
| Two settled charges, same day | A genuine duplicate, usually from a retried checkout | Refundable by Anthropic support |
| Two settled charges, a month apart | A normal renewal, not a duplicate | Nothing to fix |
| One settled charge, no plan anywhere | Payment took, provisioning failed | Support can apply the plan or refund |
| One pending charge, no plan | The purchase never completed | The hold expires; no money is lost |
Step 3 — What to send Anthropic support
If the charge has settled and the correct account still shows the free plan, this is Anthropic’s to fix and they can fix it. The quality of your first message decides whether it takes one reply or five.
- State the outcome first: the charge settled and the plan did not activate. Do not open with the word "declined" — that routes the conversation to your bank and wastes a round trip.
- Give the exact amount, including currency and any conversion shown.
- Give the date and, if you have it, the time of the charge.
- Give the merchant descriptor exactly as printed on your statement, not from memory.
- Give the last four digits of the card and the email address on the account you expect the plan to be on.
- Say explicitly which account you checked and how you signed in, so they do not spend a reply asking.
Attach a screenshot of the statement line if the interface allows it. A settled line with a date and amount is the thing that lets them find the transaction; a description of it is not.
What not to do
- Do not open a card dispute or chargeback as a first step. Disputes are adversarial, take weeks, and services routinely suspend the account being disputed — you can end up losing access to the account you were trying to pay for.
- Do not retry the purchase to "make sure it went through". That is how one charge becomes two.
- Do not buy a gift subscription to work around it while a charge is unresolved. You would be paying twice for the same month, and we would rather you did not.
- Do not cancel the card. A hold on a cancelled card is harder to release, not easier.
If the money is not recoverable
It is worth saying plainly that this is rare. Settled charges with no plan are a billing-record problem and billing records are exactly what a support team can look up. The cases that genuinely go nowhere are usually payments made to somebody other than Anthropic — a reseller with no refund policy, a Telegram seller, or an account marketplace.
That is the argument for buying from anyone, including us, only where there is a written refund policy with a stated window. Ours gives you a full refund less the network fee if a code is invalid or we miss the delivery SLA, reported within 48 hours. A seller who will not publish terms is a seller with no obligation to you.
Buying from a reseller instead? Ours publishes an itemised price and a written refund policy before you pay.

I paid for Claude Pro but my account still shows the free plan — why?
The most common cause is being signed in to a different account than the one you paid on, since a Google sign-in and an email-and-password sign-in with the same address are separate accounts. Sign out fully and sign back in the way you did at purchase. If the correct account still shows free and the charge has settled, it is a provisioning failure that Anthropic support can resolve.
Why does Claude Pro appear twice on my bank statement?
Usually one line is a settled charge and the other is an authorisation hold left over from an earlier attempt, which expires by itself within 5 to 10 working days. Two settled charges on the same day is a genuine duplicate, typically caused by refreshing a hanging checkout, and Anthropic support can refund it.
Should I file a chargeback if Claude took my money?
Not as a first step. Chargebacks are adversarial and services frequently suspend an account that is being disputed, so you can lose access to the thing you were trying to buy. Contact support with the statement details first and keep a dispute in reserve for a charge that is genuinely unrecognised.
How long does Anthropic take to refund a duplicate charge?
The refund decision is usually quicker than the money arriving. Once approved, card refunds typically take 5 to 10 working days to appear, depending on your issuer, and some banks show them only on the next statement cycle. That delay is the issuer’s, not the merchant’s.
Can I buy a gift subscription while waiting for a refund?
You can, but you would be paying twice for the same period and we would rather you waited. The exception is if you need access urgently and the disputed charge is genuinely unresolved after several days — a gift code runs on a fixed term and does not interact with the billing problem at all.
