How to cancel a Claude subscription

Last updated · Reviewed quarterly

Cancelling stops the next charge rather than ending access today — Anthropic keeps your plan running to the end of the period you have already paid for, and asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before the billing date. The part almost nobody mentions is sequencing: an active App Store or Google Play subscription blocks a gift code from being redeemed at all, so switching from a card to gift codes has an order you have to get right.

Key takeaways

  • Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; you keep the plan until then rather than being refunded the remainder.
  • Cancel at least 24 hours before the billing date, or the next charge goes through.
  • Whoever took the payment owns the cancellation — an App Store or Google Play subscription cannot be cancelled from inside Claude.
  • A mobile subscription must fully end before a gift code can be redeemed, so cancel first and buy the code afterwards.

Where to cancel, by how you subscribed

This trips people up because the cancel button is not always in Claude. Whoever takes the payment owns the cancellation, so if you subscribed through a phone app, Apple or Google controls it and Anthropic cannot cancel it for you.

The 24-hour rule applies the same way on every platform. Cancelling an hour before renewal is cutting it far too fine, and the charge going through is not something support can generally undo.

The order that matters if you are switching to gift codes

This is the part with real money attached, and almost nothing written about cancelling mentions it. Anthropic states that a gift subscription cannot be redeemed while an App Store or Google Play subscription is active. The mobile subscription has to end first — not be cancelled-but-still-running, but actually ended.

  1. Work out who is billing you. If the charge appears on an Apple or Google receipt rather than from Anthropic, you are in the mobile case.
  2. Cancel there, at least 24 hours before the next billing date, and note the date your access actually ends.
  3. Wait for the term to run out. Cancelling does not end it immediately — you keep the plan until the period closes, and the block on redeeming a gift persists while it does.
  4. Only then buy or redeem the gift code. Redeeming early is the expensive mistake, because you are paying for a code you cannot use yet while still paying Apple or Google.
  5. If you already hold a code, remember its 365-day expiry runs from the purchase date, so a long mobile term left to expire eats into that window.

What cancelling does not do

  • It does not delete your account, conversations, Projects or files. Those remain; only the usage ceiling drops to the free tier when the period ends.
  • It does not refund the remainder of the period you already paid for — you keep the access instead.
  • It does not take effect immediately, which is a feature rather than a bug if you cancelled early by mistake.
  • It does not stop a subscription billed by Apple or Google if you only cancelled inside Claude. Check the store as well.
  • It does not affect a gift code you already hold. That is a separate entitlement waiting to be redeemed.

Refunds, honestly

Anthropic does not publish a general refund policy for ordinary cancellation, and we are not going to invent one. What is documented is that access continues to the end of the period you have already paid for, which is the usual arrangement in place of a refund.

There is one documented exception, and it is worth knowing because it is the only place Anthropic commits to a prorated refund in writing. If you close a personal account in order to move it into a Team or Enterprise organisation, a subscription bought directly from Anthropic is cancelled automatically and you receive a prorated refund for the unused time. That is account closure during a migration rather than ordinary cancellation — but it does mean "Anthropic never refunds" would be too strong a claim.

Two things worth knowing rather than assuming. If Apple or Google took the payment, any refund request goes to them under their own policies, not to Anthropic. And if you are in a jurisdiction with statutory cancellation rights for digital purchases, those rights exist independently of any published policy — that is a question for the seller who charged you, and it is worth asking rather than assuming the answer is no.

Cancelling because the card keeps failing

A common reason people land here: the subscription is not the problem, the payment is. A card that starts declining on renewal produces a lapse that looks like a cancellation you did not ask for, and the instinct is to cancel properly and start again elsewhere.

  • Before cancelling, check whether international or online transactions are switched off in your banking app. That is a setting, and it is the most common cause.
  • Check the foreign-currency limit clears the plan price with roughly 10% of headroom for FX movement.
  • If the card is genuinely closed off, the cheapest remaining routes are a locally bought store gift card spent in the Claude app, or an official gift from someone abroad who already subscribes.
  • A reseller is the most expensive route and correctly the last one. If you get there, cancel the old subscription first for the reason above.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel my Claude Pro subscription?

If you subscribed on the web or desktop, go to Settings → Billing and click Cancel. If you subscribed in the iOS or Android app, open Claude, tap your initials, choose Billing, then Manage subscription — that route hands off to Apple or Google, who took the payment and control the cancellation.

Does cancelling Claude Pro stop my access immediately?

No. Anthropic states that cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period and that you keep the paid plan until then. Cancelling stops the next charge rather than ending the current term, so there is no reason to delay cancelling once you have decided.

Will I get a refund if I cancel Claude Pro?

Not for an ordinary cancellation — you keep access for the remainder of the period already paid for instead, and Anthropic publishes no general refund policy beyond that. There is one documented exception: if you close a personal account to migrate into a Team or Enterprise organisation, a subscription bought directly from Anthropic is cancelled with a prorated refund for unused time. If Apple or Google took the payment, refunds are theirs to decide. Statutory cancellation rights, where you have them, apply regardless.

Do I need to cancel my subscription before redeeming a gift code?

If you are billed by the App Store or Google Play, yes — Anthropic states a gift cannot be redeemed while a mobile subscription is active, and cancelling does not end it immediately. Wait for the term to finish, then redeem. Redeeming a gift while a web subscription of the same tier is running is different: that extends the term rather than being blocked.

What happens to my conversations if I cancel?

Nothing. Your account, conversation history, Projects and files all remain. When the paid period ends, usage limits revert to the free tier — which still includes code generation, web search, file creation and memory. Cancelling removes headroom, not data.

How do I cancel a Claude gift subscription?

There is nothing to cancel. A gift subscription is prepaid and finite with no recurring authority attached, so it simply ends at the end of its term. That is the flip side of it being unable to renew itself — forgetting about it means it stops rather than that it keeps charging you.
