What actually changes on the day

Less than people expect, and it happens without ceremony. A gift subscription has no card on file, so nothing is charged, nothing is declined, and no email arrives from Anthropic to say the term has ended. The account simply reverts to free-tier limits.

The last row is why the ending catches people out. A card subscription that lapses produces a failed payment and an email. A prepaid term produces neither, so the first sign is usually hitting a free-tier limit mid-task and wondering what changed.

What you will actually notice

• You reach a usage limit sooner than you are used to, often part-way through something.
• Long documents and codebases become the first casualty, because they consume an allowance fastest.
• Features tied to the paid tiers stop being available, while the core product continues.
• Nothing about your existing conversations changes — you can still open, read and continue them within free limits.

Restarting later

1. Buy a new term whenever you want. There is nothing to reactivate and no penalty for a gap.
2. Redeem it on the same account and the plan resumes, with your history untouched.
3. If you redeem while a term is still running and the tier matches, it extends rather than overlapping — which is why buying a few days early wastes nothing.
4. If you are paying Apple or Google for Claude, that subscription has to end before a gift can be redeemed at all.
5. Remember the gift itself expires 365 days after purchase, so a code bought far ahead and forgotten is the one real way to lose money here.

Avoiding the gap, if the gap matters

Whether to bother depends entirely on your work. If a few days on free limits is survivable, let it lapse and buy when you next need it — that is cheaper than maintaining continuity you do not need. If being interrupted has a real cost, close the gap deliberately.

• Order 3 to 5 days before the end date. Manual fulfilment means a published 12-hour window plus time for a chain confirmation.
• Redeem near the end rather than immediately, since same-tier redemption extends the term.
• Note the date somewhere you will see it. We email 5 days and 1 day before, but a calendar entry costs nothing and does not depend on us.
• If you are travelling or offline around the date, buy before you go.
• Consider a longer term if you keep hitting this. One order a year is eleven fewer chances to forget.

Cancelling, for completeness

There is nothing to cancel. A gift subscription is prepaid and finite, with no recurring authority attached, which is the same property that means it cannot renew itself. If you want it to stop, do nothing.

That is genuinely different from a card subscription, where stopping requires an action and forgetting means continuing to pay. Here forgetting means stopping. Which is better or worse depending entirely on whether you wanted to continue.
