Should you buy a 12-month Claude term?

The arithmetic, done once

Anthropic publishes two prices for Claude Pro: $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month on an annual plan billed as $200 up front. Which one you compare a reseller against changes the answer completely, and most comparisons quietly use the monthly figure because it makes the reseller look better.

Read the last two columns together. Against monthly billing our twelve-month term is only 2.0% over list, which sounds excellent. Against Anthropic’s own annual plan it is 19.9% over — $44.63 more across the year. Both numbers are true and the second is the one that matters if you could actually buy the annual plan.

The case against the twelve-month term

The maths above is only half the decision, and the other half is risk. A twelve-month order means handing a larger irreversible payment to a service you may not have used before, and being wrong costs you twelve times as much as being wrong about a month.

You are trusting the seller further. A one-month order is a test; a twelve-month order is a commitment made before the test.
You lose flexibility. Anthropic changes plans and pricing, and a year is long enough for the product you bought to become the wrong one.
Your usage may not hold up. Paying twelve months up front for a tool you use twice a week is worse value than any per-month figure suggests.
The money is committed. There is no monthly cancellation because there was never a subscription to cancel — that is the same property that makes gift codes useful.

When the long term is clearly right

You have already bought successfully from the seller at least once, so the trust question is settled rather than assumed.
You use Claude most working days and are confident that will hold for the year.
Your local currency is depreciating against the dollar. A fixed dollar price paid today does not get worse, and in several countries this outweighs everything else on this page.
Acquiring crypto is itself a chore for you — a P2P trade twelve times a year is eleven more than you need.
You keep missing renewals and losing access mid-task. One order removes eleven chances to forget.

A cheaper option than any of this

Every figure on this page is a premium over Anthropic’s own price, and that premium exists only because a card will not work for you. Can I stack two Claude gift codes to extend a term?

Not simultaneously — Anthropic states that recipients cannot redeem multiple gifts at one time or stack redemptions. What does work is sequential: redeeming a Pro gift while a Pro term is running extends that term. So buy the next one a few days early and redeem it near the end, rather than trying to apply both at once.

Is it cheaper to just fix my card?
